‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ party

Our favourite bedtime read

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of our favourite bedtime stories.. Bright, colourful and is jammed packed with lots of yummy food so was the perfect base for a party. Read on for some inspiration!

How to throw your very own Hungry Caterpillar party…

Your copy of this book will become your best friend during the planning, it holds all the inspiration that you need.

Colour scheme…

Try to stick as closely as possible to the colours in the book’s illustrations- that’s greens, red, yellow and some brighter rainbow colours. Once you have your chosen colours you can start gathering up tableware and decorations..

Before you rush out and buy decorations its worth having a look around your home to see if there is anything you can make use of, flat bed sheet as tablecloth, kids toys as props, tableware and display dishes etc you may be pleasantly surprised at what you find.

If you fancy getting creative and making a tassel garland for the front of your display table, follow our tutorial on making your own tassle garland coming soon!

Party Food

This is the easy bit! I literally took the book round the supermarket and ticked of the items as I went. Lots of healthy food and of course lots of party food too.

We printed out some little signs and illustrations to add effect.

Yummy Buns

And if you’re serving sandwiches , you could cut them out in circles using a cookie cutter and lay them out in the shape of a caterpillar.

I continued on this idea with some left over fruit and veg too.

Party Games/ Activities

We created a Very Hungry Caterpillar fruit toss and you can too, all you need is some cardboard, paint and some fruit.

On the lead up to the party, cut out and paint some old cardboard and turn it into a caterpillar (Make sure to cut out a big hole for the mouth). Gather up some fruit, Real, plastic (raid the toy box) or use sponges like us. Then when your guests arrive, take it in turns to toss the fruit in the caterpillars mouth. Whoever gets the most wins!

It also doubled up as a great photo prop!

Another activity we did was ‘Cupcake Decorating’. This was so simple to do and the kids all loved it. Bought a selection of cupcakes, colourful decorations and some induvial paint palettes. It was a great way to bring the party to an end and each kid got a little box to put their cupcake in to take home (This doubled up as a party ‘favour’ reducing the extra expense)
